The best historic destinations to venture to in the magnificent Indian region of Goa

Goa is obviously famous for its beaches and green spaces, but it is certainly much more than this and offers plenty of heritage sites and landmarks. There is an array of temples and monuments that are definitely worth visiting when in this part of India. A great example is Fort Aguada and Lighthouse that is found close to the stunning Candolim Beach. This destination was built at the beginning of the 17th century and offers a white lighthouse that dates back to 1864. The moated ruins are notably popular with travellers as they offer beautiful hilltop views. This is a fantastic place to visit as tourists can also head to the nearby beach to relax afterwards and have some delicious seafood at a top restaurant or café.

There are plenty of churches in the area but Se Cathedral in Old Goa is absolutely stunning and a very important landmark. It was created in the 1560s but not entirely finished until around a century later. Architecture enthusiasts will get very excited by the Gothic-inspired and Portuguese-style building. There are also many magnificent paintings and its famous Golden Bell that is worth seeing. Chapora Fort is another top destination for visitors to Goa that’s perched on a rocky area near a river. These historic ruins are amazing and travellers can walk along the wall to see the ramparts and turrets overlooking the Arabian Sea.

A small but interesting Portuguese fort is found at the mouth of the Terekhol River on the northern tip of Goa. The Terekhol Fort has a lovely chapel and was once a vital part of Goa’s defence from invaders. Again there are wonderful views from the top of this fort across land and water. Cabo Palace or Raj Bhavan is a presidential palace and fort that actually is the official residence of the Governor of Goa. It is located in the Goan capital of Panaji and was built in the 16th and 17th century. Inside it is very remarkable with beautiful wooden furniture and Chinese porcelain. There is also a stunning 500-year-old church in a corner of the site.
