Theatreland in London is stooped in history and offers countless options for those wishing to see a professional live performance on a stage that dates back hundreds of years. From classic plays to contemporary, glitzy musicals, there is something for everyone this season in London. So what can you go and see?
If you are visiting London either this month or the next, then be sure to catch The Madness of George III at the Apollo Theatre. With a new production that has garnered praise since its premiere at the Theatre Royal Bath, the play, written by Alan Bennett, tells the story of King George III, who suffers bouts of insanity and struggles with his son as well as coping with the cruel medical treatments thrust upon him. The Madness of George III is moving yet witty, and is a must-see before the show closes for good on 31st March 2012.
If musicals are more your thing, then there are a wealth of song-and-dance productions to choose from showing at the West End. Jersey Boys is one not to be missed for fans of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and those who are super fans could even make it a double showing by coupling a trip to see the musical with watching the man himself who is performing in London in June for the first time in 18 years! Jersey Boys is a brilliant jukebox show, which tells the rags-to-riches story of the 60s group. It features hilarious gags and touching moments interweaved with the classic songs we all know and love such as “Walk Like A Man”, “Oh! What A Night (December 1963)” and “Rag Doll”. If you like true stories and incredible music, then Jersey Boys at the Prince Edward Theatre is one to watch!
As well as the more recent musicals, the classics such as Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera are still going strong in London. Having recently celebrated its 25th anniversary in London, Phantom at Her Majesty’s Theatre would be a great choice, having played at its opening venue ever since it premiered back in 1986. The Andrew Lloyd Webber show features haunting music and a mysterious lead character, and if you haven’t yet seen it, then make this trip to London the time to do so!
