Top 3 German Christmas Markets

Germans and tourists alike are starting to gear up for the holiday season. In late November the first German Christmas markets open and millions flock to the magic and traditional stalls. But are what are the best “Christkindlesmärkte” in Germany?

3.- Stuttgart Weihnachtsmarkt

The Christmas market in Stuttgart dates back to 1692. Although not the most famous, the Stuttgart market is one of the most visited in Germany and has an idyliic atmosphere. In 2011 you will have the chance to enjoy the famous stalls for one whole month, from November 23 – December 23.

2.- Dresden Striezelmarkt

One of the oldest in Germany, the Striezelmarkt will celebrate its 577th birthday in 2011. Surrounded by beautiful traditional architecture, you will be able to stay warm by drinking some of the traditional mulled wine and eating some of the famous “Stollen” (a sweet bread, popular in the region). It begins on Nov 24 and it’ll come to an end on December 24.

1.- Nürnberger Christkindlmarkt

Considered by many the most famous of German Christmas Markets, the Nürnberg “Kris Kringle” market is the most picturesque of all. The market has a policy of offering only traditional crafts and many handmade souvenirs are on offer. A personal tip: the ginger bread strudel!

With hundreds of christmas markets, Germany is the place to be if you want to celebrate “the most wonderful time of the year”.
