Lindos is located around 55km from Rhodes Town and is the perfect spot for anyone looking for a quaint Greek resort and some breathtaking views. Whitewashed buildings winding up to the bird’s eye-high acropolis and a fascinating historical pedigree have made Lindos a hugely popular choice with visitors to Rhodes Island. Whilst you might not find big clubs and lively nightspots in Lindos (although they are all within easy reach), you will enjoy a peace and quiet here that you’re unlikely to find in many other summer holiday locations.
The beaches at Lindos cater to all tastes – the main beach (Megalos Gialos) is located along the back of the enclosed bay and is a picture perfect long stretch of sand that is protected from the elements by a rock peninsular. There is also the option of Pallas beach, which is slightly smaller but covered in a lovely light layer of golden sand, with some beautiful views. Despite being a small village, Lindos has a good selection of sights that visitors can explore on foot. The church of Panagia was built in the 1300s and has an impressive high-rise stone tower that is typical of the area. Inside, the interior has been described as ‘stunning’ with traditional pebble mosaic and impressive frescoes. At the very top of the town stands the majestic Acropolis of Lindos, which provided a fortified spot for some of the most powerful civilizations on earth, such as the Romans, the Ottomans and the Byzantines. Today, there are only remains of the once impressive temple that stood here but you can get a great sense of all those that have gone before and the views from the acropolis are quite spectacular.
Whilst not the busiest spot in Rhodes, Lindos has a great selection of restaurants, around 30 or 40 in total, with everything from seafood and traditional Greek dishes, to Chinese and Indian food on offer. Many of the restaurants have roof terraces where diners can enjoy their meals al fresco in the glow of the evening sun and under the watchful eye of the Acropolis. Kalypso (http://www.kalypsolindos.gr) is located in the 17th century Captain’s House and has a terrace with views to rival those of anywhere else on the island. Ambrosia (http://www.lindostreasures.com/ambrosia) is regarded as one of the most up-market restaurants in Lindos and has a wide selection of dishes on offer, including freshly caught seafood and grilled meat.
The nightlife in Lindos perhaps not as impressive as some of the other locations in Rhodes but there are still plenty of options, with a variety of entertainment on offer, whether you are looking for all night partying or a quiet drink. There are 3 clubs in Lindos – Glow Club, Arches and Acropolis – catering to wide range of music tastes, and the town has plenty of bars – from sports bars, to reggae bars – for a pre-club drink, or a post dinner nightcap.
Exploring Lindos is a great way to spend some time on a day trip from Rhodes Town, or for a longer period of time if you want to really relax and chill out. The town has everything visitors could want from a holiday destination, as well as some of the most picture perfect beaches on the whole of the island.
