Is it Safe to Travel to Tunisia Now?

With reports of over 50 people being killed this week, and violence spreading to tourist areas, is it still safe to travel to Tunisia?

Many countries advise against non-essential travel to Tunisia due to a deteriorating security situation in many parts of the country. Tourists are advised you to reconsider their need to travel to Tunisia because of the unpredictable security situation, the risk of civil unrest and the threat of kidnapping and terrorist attack.

On 14 January 2011, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali left the country following an internal coup. An interim President has been appointed. A State of Emergency and curfews are now in force. Until the State of Emergency is lifted, a gathering of more than two people is illegal in public places.
# Tunisian airspace has reopened but flights may be subject to ongoing disruptions and cancellations. Airports may close at short notice while the State of Emergency is in force and the situation remains volatile. Australians should check with their airlines or travel agents about scheduled flights and possible travel restrictions.
