The Facets of Disabled Travel

Those that have a disability will tell you that travel can sometimes be difficult. This is because the accommodations necessary to make disabled travel smooth are not always accessible. This is not due to any lack of sensitivity on the part of anyone. Rather, many traditional vacation accommodations were not designed to be accessible to handicapped vacationers. In time, the travel industry became more aware of the needs of disabled vacationers. As a result, effective accommodations are provided for those in need of such special requirements.

For example, many vacations involve guided tours. Such tours will require transportation from your lodgings to the various sights you would be seeing on the tour. With a travel service that takes disabilities into consideration, the process can be made much easier for those that might have disability issues. How can this be achieved? The tour buses could be wheelchair accessible and the destinations could encompass only those sites that have equivalent wheelchair accessibility.

Some may not think that this is ‘all that much’ but it makes a tremendous amount of difference for those that might be in need of such special services. Imagine going on a guided tour and having to navigate a wheelchair through venues that are not designed for them. This could prove challenging at best and frustrating at worst. As a result, it is best to look towards those booking agents that take disabled travel accommodations in mind when making a booking.

One way to make sure that you can have all your accommodations met would be to discuss your situation with a travel agent. The agents are these to make sure your trip goes exactly as planned. By providing the travel agent with clear details of your situation, you can be sure to devise the proper travel arrangements for your needs.

Some may be saying that they do not deal directly with a travel agent. Rather, they will book their accommodations through a travel website. That is fine. All you need to do is call the customer service number that such sites provide toll free. The representative on the other end of the line can certainly aid in making sure your needs are met. This way, your trip proves to be one that meets all your requirements and expectations.

Just be sure to be thorough in explaining you own particular needs. The representative from the travel service will not be able to fill in any blanks regarding your necessities. There are just too many variables in which to consider. As such, you should always be clear with the individual regarding what might be required to make your trip more accessible and enjoyable.

Additionally, it would not hurt to send a follow up email to the person you spoke with on the phone. In the email, you could list your requirements as discussed over the phone. By sending such info via email, you can be sure nothing has been forgotten or any oversights have occurred. This enhances the odds that your accommodations will be effectively met when your vacation time actually approaches.

I think if you are disabled then definetely use a travel agent and do not book through the internet. Also as well, do as much research on a destination before booking by using Google. Imagine going to a place and finding out that you can not get around easy. Not only will it ruin your holiday but it will also ruin the holiday of those traveling with you.

It was really hard for disabled person to travel, that is a fact. But with the emerging new technology and some travel agencies giving priority to disabled travelers, then it will be a bit more easy now.
