Destination ideas for a self-catering holiday

A self-catering holiday doesn’t have the same meaning today as it did for a previous generation of holidaymakers. For the modern traveller, flexibility is the key ingredient and this is what self-catering holidays provide in abundance.

Spain is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, due to the wonderfully diverse choice of experiences it has to offer. From privately-owned luxury villas, apartments and bungalows on the Costa Blanca to rustic farmhouses in more rural locations and trendy city-centre apartments in bustling areas such as Madrid or Barcelona – every style of accommodation is on offer, catering to all budgets and preferences.

Holiday villas in Spain often include private swimming pools, and other extras that you wouldn’t find in an overcrowded resort hotel. Many of the villas offered in Spain are let directly by the owners, reducing additional fees and offering a more personal touch to those choosing to stay in these apartments.

Tenerife is, of course, part of the Canary Islands – which are coincidentally part of Spain. However, located as they are in the middle of the ocean far from the Mediterranean, a holiday here is a very different experience.

Renting villas in Tenerife is the perfect way to explore what the islands have to offer. From scuba-diving and parasailing to golfing, there is no shortage of activities and, for the more sedate experience, the sub-tropical Canary Islands boast some wonderful beaches.

The volcanic origins of the islands provide some unique landscapes and of course great bars and restaurants help provide a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Popular resorts include Santa Cruz, San Eugenio, Los Christanos, Las Americas and Fanabe.

Villas in Greece offer access to sites of historical intrigue, beautiful beaches and charming fishing villages. With a little research you can hunt down some fantastic bargains which will provide the perfect mix of beautiful weather and Greek hospitality. Of course, for all that the mainland has to offer, the Greek islands are rightly renowned as tourist favourites.

Corfu’s rugged mountainsides and olive groves offer some great days out, whilst Corfu Town itself has some beautiful examples of Venetian architecture. The island of Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, with an astonishing 4,000 years of history as well.

Of course, all of this is provided alongside the obligatory mix of beautiful sandy beaches, impressive mountains and quaint hillside villages that you would rightly expect.
